At the time of writing I don’t know whether to say the restaurant is dead, fairly busy, very busy or absolutely booming. Let me describe last week and let you decide. Wednesday – zero clients. Thursday – zero clients. Friday absolutely full and we refused 5 tables. Saturday – 16 diners. How on earth do I describe that level of business? In the coming week we have 12 booked in for Wednesday and then nobody else all week (so far). It does make planning somewhat challenging!
Anyway whether we are full or empty we are having a great time. Running a restaurant is a lifelong dream and we are really enjoying it. Of course a new restaurant has to improve and evolve. We are pleased with our recently introduced vegetarian menu. Ranging from a simple salad with the local Tomme Catalan cheese and walnuts to mushroom risotto with parmesan and baked camembert with garlic, white wine and thyme, it has been well received.
We have taken the decision to simplify our wine list somewhat. I read wine lists for fun but we found that some people thought it too long and we have reduced it down to about 50 wines from over 100 previously. We do have an absolutely sublime local 2013 Caramany from a well known small producer which is a limited release. We try to have lots of special offers on our wine to allow clients to taste wine that they might normally not have the chance to try and rather than 25 € we have it listed at 19 €. The only problem is stopping me from ‘testing the quality on a daily basis’. Val needs great firmness with me! We also have Nicholas Feuillatte Champagne at only 32 € and an excellent Massada Cotes Catalanes at 14 € as well as the multi award winning Guinot Blanquette de Limoux sparkling wine at 19 €.
Most wines are well under 20 € a bottle but we also have a great Mouton Rothschild 1993 that Val has promised that if we don’t sell that we can drink on Christmas Day. At 229 € a bottle I don’t know if I want the cash from selling it or would prefer to drink it myself! Actually, sod the money. I want it!
Thanks to all our clients and as ever, happy dining.
